Heavy D

Heavy D

On 8th November 2011, the sad and unexpected message reaches us that Heavy D passed away. Let’s rejoice his hit performance at the MTV BET Awards, which was his first televised show in 15 years and unfortunately his last one. And check the video from his last interview on radio 1Xtra below, speaking on the start of hip hop, the tragic passing of Troy and ‘T.R.O.Y.’, his cousin Pete Rock and his BET performance. Born in Jamaica as Dwight Arrington Myers and growing up in NYC, he started his career at a young age with the hip hop group Heavy D & the Boyz, which included dancer G-Whiz, dancer and founder “Trouble” T-Roy and DJ/producer Eddie F. He continued his solo music and acting career ever since. No further introduction needed, we all know him. Either his name from Biggie’s Juicy -‘And Heavy D up in the limousine’ – or his sound from their hits -that I feel still belong in every hip hop DJ’s party collection-. His last words, even though spoken on Twitter, were ‘Be Inspired’. Nobody could have seen this coming, Hip Hop lost another pioneer. Rest In Peace D, we reminisce over you.
